St. Teresa of Avila was a Spanish saint and mystic. A Carmelite nun, Teresa experienced many visions of Jesus and Mary. Her autobiography, The Wayto Perfection, is one of the greatest works of Christian Mysticism. Teresa was deeply focused on mental prayer, strict poverty, and mortification, and established the Discalced Carmelite Order. Today, she is one of the most famous saints in the world. St. Teresa of Avila is a Doctor of the Church.
