St. John of the Cross, along with St. Teresa of Avila, reformed the Carmelite Order. Other Carmelites, who wanted to keep their lax life, imprisoned him for a short time, but he persevered and eventually enacted his reforms successfully. He is the patron saint of contemplatives.
