Blessings promised to Individuals for wearing the Sacred Heart Image: He promised to pour out into the hearts of all those who honor the image of His Heart all the gifts which it contains. He promised also, to imprint his love on the hearts of all those who would wear this image on their persons and that He would destroy in them all disordered movements. (From "The devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus" by Father John Croiset, S.J.)

The brown scapular promise was given to St Simon Stock, a Prior General of the Carmelite Order, by the Blessed Virgin Mary. When the Blessed Mother appeared to St Simon Stock, she handed him the scapular and promised that Whosoever dies wearing this scapular (habit) will not suffer eternal fire.

The 1912 Catholic Encyclopedia states that a list of indulgences, privileges, and indults of the Scapular Confraternity of Mount Carmel was approved on July 4, 1908, by the Congregation of Indulgences. The Vatican's Congregation for Divine Worship states the Brown Scapular is an external sign of the filial relationship established between the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother and Queen of Mount Carmel, and the faithful who entrust themselves totally to her protection, who have recourse to her maternal intercession, who are mindful of the primacy of the spiritual life and the need for prayer.
